At: We will meet at the Burton Library.

Whilst being active is more commonly known to be good for your physical health, doing a bit of exercise can also provide some fantastic benefits for your mental health!

A study looked into how effective running could be for our mental health when compared to medication to treat anxiety and depression.

The study itself determined that around half of the group who had selected the running regime, had experienced positive changes with their depression, and anxiety. With additional improvements towards their physical health too such as blood pressure, heart functions and weight.

Sticking to the running regime also helped them in other aspects of life too, through encouraging people to go outside, set personal goals, improve their fitness and even giving them a chance to be social through participating in a group activity. All of these can be fantastic for our mental health!

In comparison to the medication where the study instead showed to have a worse impact on those same physical health markers.

Why does being active have such a positive impact on our mental health?

There are several main reasons, the first being that when we exercise our body will release feel-good hormones that are great at improving our mood and even providing us with a boost of energy. You might have heard this called a 'Runners high' before!

Other reasons include...

-       Giving a boost to our self-esteem and confidence. The more time we spend being active, the more it can help us to feel better about ourselves.

-       An increase in motivation and focus. If we get into a routine of regular exercise, it can often help us stay motivated to ensure we stick to that schedule.

-       Reducing tension, anxiety, stress and mental fatigue.

-       Calming the mind, especially when going through a hard time or maybe experiencing difficult emotions.

-       Getting yourself out and around other people! This can help build relationships with other people through a shared interest.

The NHS states that around 150 minutes of moderate activity each week is what the average adult should aim for when doing exercise.

However, we understand that starting an exercise regime can often be a daunting task. That is why we are making this a ‘Beginner Running Group’, so it is a fantastic first step for those who want to take part.

The ‘Couch to 5k’ style will give you time to build up your ability at your own pace.

We are incredibly grateful to Dave Garb, of Thrive Fitness and Nutrition who will be leading these sessions and providing lots of helpful information.
