Constructing Staffordshire Minds!

The construction industry is a vital part of our infrastructure, with the workers showing unmatched resilience and dedication doing hard, tiring work daily, even through difficult conditions.

However, with this comes a growing crisis which often can be overlooked.

We are talking about the mental health struggles of people working within the construction industry such as depression, anxiety and suicide.

At Burton and District Mind, we aim to change that, which will be done through our brand-new campaign!

This campaign is called Constructing Staffordshire Minds.

This blog post will serve as a bit of an introduction to this campaign, and show you how you can get involved...

In any workplace, it is vital that the mental health of employees is looked after, as not only will it improve their wellbeing, but it will also usually lead to them working to a higher standard. On a construction site, it can also mean that injury rates could also be reduced.

Additionally, Deloitte's Return on investment analysis (ROI) suggests that for every £1 spent on supporting people’s mental health, employers will get nearly £4.70 back on their investment in improved productivity.

To do this, employers can make early changes, like improving the organisation’s culture, and providing education, rather than waiting until someone needs urgent support to get involved. Its all about taking preemptive action, instead of reactionary.

As part of the Constructing Staffordshire Minds Campaign, we have two main aims which are…

  • Creating a supportive environment helps workers feel more valued and connected, leading to

greater job satisfaction, loyalty and retention.

  • Breaking the stigma around mental health will lead to a safer, more supportive work environment, encouraging workers to speak up when they need support.

So how are mental health and working in construction linked? Here is some information which highlights the links between the two, and the importance of this campaign.

  • Construction workers are 3x more likely to die by suicide than those in other industries, with the research showing that the sector has the highest suicide rate in the UK.

  • Anxiety and depression rates in construction are higher than average. Many workers face stress due to long hours, high-pressure deadlines, and job insecurity.

  • The physical nature of the job can take a toll, leading to chronic pain, injuries and burnout, which compounds mental health struggles.

  • The long hours often leave workers with little time for rest or self-care, and the demanding nature of the job can isolate workers, making it difficult to talk about mental health

Whether you're leading a team, working on-site, or managing the details, we want you to know that support is available. Your mental health matters, and there are resources to help you through tough times. You’re not alone – together, we can build a stronger, healthier industry.
