Epic Walk to Pride!
This month, Susy is taking on a massive challenge of walking a total of 100 miles whilst raising money to support the work that we do at Burton & District Mind in memory of her friend Jay.
We spoke to Susy about what this is all about!
What is the Epic Walk to Pride?
Jay’s Walk to Pride is a fundraising challenge in memory of my friend Jay. Throughout June, I am walking 100 miles to raise money for Mind Burton & District’s LGBTQIA+ projects and to help raise awareness of the mental health support available within our local community.
The challenge will culminate on 27th June with a walk from Barton Marina to Shobnall Leisure Complex for Burton Pride. I’m hoping people will join me for that final walk, creating an opportunity to celebrate Jay’s life, share memories, and come together in support of an important cause.
Can you tell us about the story behind why you are doing it?
Jay was one of those people who left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was full of life, kindness, humour and energy. He was there for many important moments in my life, and his friendship meant a great deal to me. Following his passing, I wanted to do something meaningful that would honour his memory in a way that felt personal.
Walking felt like the right challenge for me. We would walk our dogs together regularly. It’s something that helps me process my thoughts and emotions, and spending time walking throughout June has given me space to reflect on my memories of Jay and the impact he had on so many people.
I also believe Jay would have been proud of this challenge. The charity is one that he liked and supported, which makes raising money for their work feel like a fitting tribute to his memory.
Can people get involved, and if so, how?
Absolutely. People can support the challenge by donating through the JustGiving page, sharing the fundraiser with friends and family, or helping to raise awareness of the services available through Mind Burton & District.
I would also love for people to join me on the final walk to Burton Pride on 27th June. Whether someone knew Jay personally or simply wants to support the cause, everyone is welcome. My hope is that it will be an opportunity to come together, share stories, celebrate Jay’s life and support mental health within our community.

Why Burton & District Mind?
Mental health challenges can affect anyone, but some of the experiences faced by LGBTQIA+ people can be unique and complex. While many mental health issues are universal, there can be additional pressures around identity, acceptance, discrimination, isolation and belonging.
That’s why I believe dedicated LGBTQIA+ support is so important. Having access to someone who understands those experiences, whether through professional expertise, lived experience, or both, can make a huge difference to someone who is struggling.
Burton & District Mind provides valuable support within our local community, and their LGBTQIA+ projects help ensure that people can access services that are inclusive, understanding and tailored to their needs. Supporting that work feels like a positive way to honour Jay’s memory while helping others.
What are your aims for the challenge?
My first aim is to raise as much money as possible for Burton & District Mind’s LGBTQIA+ projects so they can continue providing support within our community.
Alongside fundraising, I want to raise awareness of the services that are available and encourage conversations around mental health. Sometimes simply knowing that support exists can be the first step towards someone reaching out for help.
On a personal level, this challenge is also about celebrating Jay’s life and recognising the impact he had on so many people. If we can honour his memory, bring people together, raise awareness and support a worthwhile cause at the same time, then I will consider the challenge a success.
Thank you!
We at Burton & District Mind want to take this opportunity to also say a massive thank you to Susy and everyone involved. Your kindness and dedication are truly inspiring, and we are incredibly grateful for your support towards our LGBTQIA+ projects and for supporting local mental health.
We are also incredibly grateful to be a part of a celebration of Jay, who was such an important part of many people’s lives.
